Social networking sites were abuzz with sarcasm on steel minister Beni Prasad Verma's comment that the alleged scam of Rs 71 lakh was "too small" for a Union minister.
Tweets started flooding in since the media flashed his comment aimed at shielding cabinet colleague Salman Khurshid that a person of the law Minister's stature would not do anything wrong for as small an amount as Rs 71 lakh.
"Nobel Prize for Economics has been given. It should be given to Beni Prasad Verma who has discovered MSV - Minimum Scam Value = 71 Lakhs," Tweeted Rakesh Jhunjhunwala.
"Beni Prasad Verma is right. A 71 lakh rupee scam is too less. Indian Politicians have Self Respect.Aaj bhi gire hue scams nahin uthate (they have not stooped to that level)," he added.
Describing Verma's defence as "weak", another netizen suggested UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi might be very happy with the fact that Verma did not try to defend her son-in-law Robert Vadra, who is also facing charges of misappropriation of funds.
Verma was also dubbed as a big competitor for his party colleague Digvijay Singh.
"Now there is Tough Competition between "DigVijay Singh and Beni Prasad Verma". Dekho kaun jyada "Bhonkta" hai (Let's see who shouts more)."
The funniest of them all was,"Beni Prasad Verma to Khurshid - Bas 71 Lac ka Scam, Naak Katwa di yaar !! Kuch dhang ka amount toh rakh lete ( Just Rs 71 lakh. He should have fallen for better amount:)".
