Expelled CPI(M) leader Somnath Chatterjee has declined an offer made on behalf of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to be a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha.

Expelled CPI(M) leader Somnath Chatterjee has declined an offer made on behalf of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to be a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha.

Chatterjee told PTI here tonight that the offer was made to him about five days ago but "I feel I will not be able to make any useful contribution and therefore I may be excused".

Chatterjee was expelled from CPI(M) in July last year after he defied the party diktat to step down as Lok Sabha Speaker ahead of the confidence vote sought by Singh in Parliament on Indo-US nuclear deal issue.
