A day after DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi was sent to Tihar jail, the Rajya Sabha MP had an emotional bonding with her mother and son when she appeared before the special CBI court on Saturday.
At the beginning of Saturday's court proceedings, Kanimozhi's advocate complained of the unhygienic toilet facilities in her cell at Tihar jail number 6. The lawyer said his client had a restless night in the jail and could not freshen up properly in the morning.
Though in a pensive mood, Kanimozhi managed a smile as she stepped out of the lock-up to make her way into the adjacent courtroom. She appeared glad when greeted by her party workers, who were anxiously waiting to meet her.
"I'm ok. Have to now deal with whatever comes my way," she told a crowd of mediapersons gathered right outside the lock-up.
Kanimozhi's mother, Rajathi Ammal, broke down on seeing her daughter enter the courtroom in the custody of policemen. The two sat together and chatted for a long time. Kanimozhi's son too gave her company, as he sat on her lap. She was heard telling him not to worry and promised to return to be with him on Monday.
The Rajya Sabha MP along with the other accused in judicial custody were asked to appear before special CBI judge OP Saini as the latter was scheduled to deliver his verdict on the bail pleas of Asif Balwa and Rajeev Aggarwal.
Saini, however, deferred the date to May 24. Balwa and Aggarwal are directors of Kusegaon Realty and have been charged with criminal conspiracy, cheating and corruption in the 2G scam.
The court is also expected to deliver its order next week on the anticipatory bail plea of Cineyug Films promoter Karim Morani, who was also named by the CBI as a co-accused in its second chargesheet.
Morani hasn't appeared in court so far. His lawyers say that he's undergone surgeries and is still recuperating in hospital.
In Tihar, Mobile seized from Agarwal
Tihar prison authorities have allegedly seized a high-end mobile phone from one of the 2G spectrum scam accused, Rajiv Aggarwal, who is lodged there along with 13 other co-accused in the case.
Guards of the Tamil Nadu Special police recovered a "blackberry mobile phone device from Rajiv Aggarwal on Friday evening when he returned to the jail after attending a court hearing," said the jail's spokesperson Sunil Gupta. Gupta added, "He could have got it from somebody during his trip to the court."
He said when grilled by prison officials Aggarwal allegedly clarified that "he got the phone "mistakenly".
Delhi Armed Police (DAP) guards, who escort the jail's inmates to courts and back, are allegedly under the scanner. "The prison administration will conduct a probe into this as per the rules. In case there is any lapse on the part of any DAP guard then we will inform the concerned officials," said Tihar's Director General Neeraj Kumar.
