Congress president Sonia Gandhi underwent a successful surgery in a hospital in New York, US, according to a CNN-IBN report .
Earlier, Congress general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi announced in Parliament on Thursday that Sonia Gandhi has gone to the US, to undergo surgery for a medical condition, which the party did not disclose. Making a bare announcement, Dwivedi told reporters that the 64-year-old leader was recently diagnosed with a medical condition and has been advised surgery.
"Sonia Gandhi has been recently diagnosed with a medical condition that requires surgery. On advice from her doctors, she has travelled abroad and is likely to be away for two to three weeks," Dwivedi said.
"She formed a four-member group, including son and Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi, to look after party matters in her absence," Dwivedi added. The others are defence minister AK Antony, Janardhan Dwivedi and Ahmed Patel.
A party leader said the Congress headquarters had received reports of prayer meetings and 'havans' conducted in different parts of the country, wishing Gandhi a speedy recovery.
