Residents of Dwarka, on the Delhi-Haryana border will soon be able to shop in comfort and style. The upcoming Dwarka Sector 21 Metro Station that will connect Indira Gandhi International Airport through Airport Express Line will have the biggest and swankiest plaza.
Sector 21 will soon become a commercial as well as transportation hub, thanks to the upcoming Metro station in Dwarka Sector 21. It will have a retail mall, business hotel, commercial offices and serviced apartments. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is planning to lease out 22,100 sq metre at the upcoming Metro station.
This will be the biggest commercial space at any Metro station after Pragati Maidan Metro Station (8,000 sq mt). Besides this, it will be the only commercial plaza on any Metro station that will have a business hotel.
"The proposed commercial plaza, hotels, food joints in the Metro station are something that have been waiting for. Once these are in place we will not have to go to either Gurgaon or Rajouri Garden to explore state- of-the- art malls," said harmesh Dewan, a resident of Dwarka Sector 9.
"We will invite tenders by December. But we have already started receiving queries from a number of shopping mall owners and hoteliers who are showing keen interest in setting malls and hotels in the space," said a senior DMRC officer, not authorised to speak to the media.
The Dwarka Sector 21 station, which will soon be operational, is unique as it will essentially be two stations merged into one. It will have four levels — the platforms will be at the underground level, concourse at ground level and the upper two levels will be for commercial development.
"We will give out the commercial space on a 15-year license. The space available on the ground floor is 1,100 sq metre, first floor is 11,000 sq metre and second floor is 10,000 sq metre," informed a DMRC official.
The Metro station area is also going to be a major transportation hub with a train terminal (Shahbad-Mohammad- pur), inter-state bus terminal and container depot being built in the area by various agencies. Rajiv Chowk-Dwarka Metro Line and the New Delhi-Airport Express Line both will terminate at this station, which is located about 5 kilometres from IGI Airport. A five-star hotel is also being set up by the Taj Group within half a kilometre from the station.
