Speakers at gender seminar ask masses to go beyond slogans

Gender equality was in focus at Delhi Public School, Mathura Road on last Saturday as the cradle, under the aegis of Delhi Public School Society, hosted a national seminar titled Contemporary Gender Issues in Education: From Human Rights to Gender Equity.

The event was graced by Syeda Hameed, member of Planning Commission of India as its chief guest and saw a number of eminent speakers calling for gender equality.

All of them asked the masses to go beyond slogans and actually start implementing the solutions at the ground level, for which public participation was required.

The speakers, during the event, were unanimous in their opinion that there should be a clear focus on gender relationship as human rights/gender rights education entails four As: Availability, Accessibility, Acceptability, Adaptability The seminar concluded on a very thought provoking Urdu couplet "Umar bhar ek hi galti karte rahe, dhool thi chehre par, hum aayeena saaf karte rahe". (We kept making the same mistake; it was our face that was grimy but we kept wiping the mirror instead).
