A 28-year-old cyclist was mowed down by a speeding car in south-west Delhi’s Dwarka early on Thursday.
Shankar Sharma (28) was on his way home when a rashly-driven car, suspected to be a Honda City, hit his cycle from behind, throwing him hard on the ground .
The driver of the Honda City left Sharma bleeding on the road and fled from the spot.
An eyewitness told the police that a silver car heading towards Dwarka Sector 5 hit the cyclist, rammed a divider and skid for a few metres before coming to a halt. The driver did not stop. The passerby then called the police.
“When the team reached the spot, we found the man lying in a pool of blood. His broken cycle was lying a few metres away. His shoes and cap were lying nearby. We rushed him to the hospital but he was declared dead on arrival. His family was informed and the body was sent for a postmortem examination,” a senior police officer said.
“There are skid marks on the road and silver paint on the divider, which shows that the car rammed the divider,” he added.
The police were yet to identify the driver. “The eyewitness has told us that it was a silver Honda City but we need to verify it. We have asked for CCTV footage from cameras installed on the stretch. Once we have the registration number of the car, we can trace the driver. Investigation is on. A case of rash and negligent driving causing death has been registered at the Dwarka South police station,” police said.
