A police constable’s leg was fractured after a speeding car rammed into a police picket in south Delhi’s Jor Bagh area on Sunday morning.

The car was allegedly being driven by the son of a Delhi High Court judge in an inebriated state.

Surprisingly, even though one of their own staff was injured in the incident, the local police claimed that the “accident occurred because of the barricades, which were being put up improperly”.

“The incident was reported from the Lodhi Colony area at 4 am on Sunday. Three officers were manning a checkpoint with two barricades at Aurobindo Marg near Jor Bagh, when a speeding Hyundai Accent car approached them from the AIIMS side,” said a senior police officer.

Police said the car, which bears a Delhi High Court sticker on its front number plate, hit a road divider before it careened into the barricades on the road.

“One of the barricades fell on ASI Sodan Singh’s leg and left him with a fractured leg. He was rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre, where doctors noticed multiple fractures in his right leg. He is undergoing treatment,” the officer said.

Police claimed that the errant driver fled the spot on foot minutes after the accident took place at 4 am.

“It is possible that the driver was unable to spot the barricades due to the thick fog. We have registered a case and are verifying the driver’s credentials. The other two officers on duty said that the vehicle was occupied by two persons,” the officer added.
