A 24-year-old call centre executive committed suicide at her rented south Delhi flat early on Tuesday, allegedly over a failed relationship, the police said.
Identified as Shivani, a native of Haridwar in Uttarakhand, she worked at a prominent call centre in Gurgaon and had rented a flat in Munirka, near Vasant Vihar, five months ago. She left behind a suicide note, stating that she was taking the extreme step because the man she was in love with wasn't responding to her advances "despite efforts".
"The incident was reported around 4:30pm by her landlord who was informed by some other tenants about the hanging. A police team was rushed to the spot. Shivani was found hanging from the ceiling fan with a stole around her neck," said a police officer.
The cops rushed her to the Trauma Centre at AIIMS, where doctors declared her dead. The police informed Shivani's parents, who took custody of her body on Tuesday evening after a post-mortem examination.
In addition to a suicide note, in which she has mentioned the name of the man who spurned her advances, Shivani has also apologised to her parents for ending her life. The police refused to divulge the man's name in the interest of investigation.
Initial probe, according to the police, suggests that Shivani took the extreme step almost immediately after returning home from work around 4am.
"We have seized her mobile phone. She had sent the man a text message to inform him about her decision to commit suicide," the officer said.
Working in a senior position in the call centre, Shivani was also a trained air-hostess and had worked as the ground crew with a domestic carrier."A case has been registered at the Vasant Vihar police station and investigations are underway," the officer added.
