According to the members of NDTA, which is the biggest stakeholder of the CP redevelopment project, while using sandstone would mean continuing with the original flooring style of the heritage market, it will be more practical to use granite, keeping in mind its less maintenance and long life compared to sandstone.

“We have already written to DUAC explaining our preference for granite over sandstone that the urban body had suggested, said Atul Bhargava, NDTA president.

“While we do not want to interfere with heritage development, we are looking at a more practical option. Considering the heavy pedestrian movement in CP, sandstone flooring will be difficult to sustain. Besides, cleaning marks of tobacco spit
and other marks is easier with granite flooring,” he added.

The commission has referred the letter to NDMC, seeking its comments on the matter. According to the traders’ body a decision has to be taken before October 30, as NDMC will require time to procure granite stone in bulk for the redevelopment work.

“DUAC officials will come to CP for an inspection this week and we are hoping they will agree to granite flooring,” added Bhargava.

While the civic body has used granite for flooring in the restored C-Block, the DUAC has asked the civic body to used sandstone henceforth. Presently, the flooring of the rest of CP is Kota stone.

According to NDMC, the arts council had rejected their earlier plan for using granite as the flooring material, which the civic body claims is more durable and stronger.

“We initially had wanted to use granite as done in C-Block but due to DUAC’s recommendation we will now be using sandstone in the other blocks, unless a further intervention is made,” said a NDMC official.
