Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar on Saturday released a stamp in the memory of late freedom fighter and former Deputy Mayor of Delhi Lala Ramcharan Agrawal.
Kumar said Agrawal was the first to start the plan for construction of Rain Baseras for night stay of footpath dwellers. She also recalled his efforts to get the Yamuna river cleaned and provide clean drinking water to people in New Delhi.
She added that the late Congress leader should serve as an example for youths and recalled that Agrawal was made the treasurer of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee when he was just 19 years old.
Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dixit, Minister of State for Communication and IT Sachin Pilot, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal, AICC general secretaries Rahul Gandhi, Janardan Dwivedi and Motilal Vora were present on the occasion in the Parliament complex.
Highlighting the contributions of Agrawal in the freedom struggle, Pilot said that the late Congress leader was a true Gandhian and had joined freedom movement at the age of 19.
Dixit said Agrawal was very forthright in speaking the truth and used to fight for even small party workers.
A slide-show on Agrawal's association with freedom fighters and former Prime Ministers of the country was also held on the occasion.
His son and DPCC President JP Agrawal read out a message of Congress President Sonia Gandhi in which she said the late Congress leader worked tirelessly for uplift of the weaker sections in Delhi.
