The body of a stillborn that was buried at a graveyard near Delhi Gate went missing on Tuesday evening, the police said. The baby was buried on Friday afternoon.

The family was shocked to discover that the body was missing when they went to perform some rites on Tuesday.

The graveyard is located behind the Ferozeshah Kotla cricket ground.

After giving birth to the child, his mother Ibaid Khan, too, died two days later, following medical complications.

The police said they have registered a case under Section 297 IPC (trespassing on burial places) at the IP Estate police station.Police said it was too early to say whether someone had stolen the body or some animal has taken it away.

“The body was buried under a superficial layer of loose earth at the graveyard. It is also possible that an animal may have pulled it out. But we are not ruling anything out. To investigate the matter, we have registered a case,” said Harendra K Singh, additional deputy commissioner of police (central).
