With the possibility of fresh elections looming large in the Capital, the state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to see a structural rejig under its Delhi chief Satish Upadhyay.

Upadhyay wants fresh faces — who can perform — in different units of the party. Apart from the district units and mandals, the youth wing, women’s cell and minority cell will be revamped and fresh faces included.

Upadhyay said there would be zero tolerance for people involved in financial irregularities and property dealing. “The new team is likely to be formed after August 9. I want to make it clear that I don’t believe in favouritism but I do believe that there are many workers who are working for the party for the past several years but never get the chance to hold a post. Such party workers will be identified and given posts so that they can work for the party,” Upadhyay said.

Sources said party workers had already started meeting Upadhyay but any decision would be taken after August 9 when party leaders gather to ratify the appointment of Amit Shah as the BJP president.

Upadhyay wants people with a clean record in his team and the background of every person holding an important post will be checked.

“Apart from the person’s background, his character and his attitude towards women is a criteria. After that, we will see if the worker is involved in any financial irregularities. Though I am not against people who are in the business of real estate, small-time property dealers will not be given a chance. We have to check if someone is using the party’s name to grab land,” he further said.

Sources said that people holding a post for a long time will be shunted out. “There are many workers who are working for the party effortlessly but are not getting anything in return. I will give a chance to such people as the party requires good people. If people, who have come from other parties, deserve the chance, they will also be given important posts,” said Upadhyay.

AAP and elections
Upadhyay said the AAP should withdraw the letter to the Lieutenant Governor in which it had said it doesn’t want a re-election in Delhi if it is serious about a repoll. Kejriwal had met LG Najeeb Jung in May and said that it wanted to form the government in Delhi and asked him not to dissolve the legislative assembly. “He must withdraw that letter if he is serious about re-election,” said Upadhyay.
