A foldable, adjustable bicycle that you as well as your child can ride and a treadmill that washes your clothes as you sweat it out; the second “Mad About Science” fair at Shri Ram School, Vasant Vihar, had nine such grassroot innovations that have changed many lives in rural areas.

Organised on Sunday in collaboration with the National Innovation Foundation and the Discovery Channel, the innovations inspired hundreds of students and parents who came to the fair.

“The washing-cum-exercising machine made by Remya Jose P really impressed me, considering that there are areas in the country that still go without electricity. It gives people, especially women, living in such areas, a chance to lead a more comfortable life,” said Arjun Khaitan, 35, who came to the fair with his niece.

The fair, inaugurated by AS Pillai, CEO, BrahMos Aerospace, saw stalls set up by students of nursery through Class 5 based on topics such as sound, colour, water, light, air, human body and magnetism.

The fair is a an initiative in which parents tie up with students and help them set up projects, make models and explain theories. The stalls had simple yet insightful projects that aimed at clarifying concepts in a simple manner.

“Bernoulli’s theorem, magnetic field, diffraction of light and many other experiments are simplified by showing their simple applications. This is what we aim for,” said one of the parents.

Pillai also discussed with the students from Class 2 through Class 5 about big innovations in the field of science.
