Hundreds of students deposited admission form across Delhi University colleges on Monday, the last day to deposit them, in scenes that recalled the first day rush.

The first day excitement was, however, replaced by anxiety and panic as students, holding umbrellas as it rained, hurried to fill up the admission form. At Arts Faculty in North Campus, the chaos was evident. As it rained, panicky students filled up wet, smudged and folded OMR forms. The counters were kept open till late afternoon to accommodate applicants, many of who arrived after 1 p.m. (the official deadline to submit the form). Individual colleges accepted forms up to 4 p.m.

“We sold 5,631 forms and received 14,974 forms today,” said S.K. Vij, Dean Students Welfare. At the end of the day the total number of forms sold for the academic year 2008-09 stood at 1.35 lakh, 3,000 more than 2007. However, the total number of forms deposited fell, from 93,000 last year to 92,758 this year.

Confusion seemed to be the order of the day at Kirori Mal College as students bought and filled up forms in haste. Many did so without even reading the instructions mentioned in the information bulletin, which resulted in careless mistakes. While some used pencils to fill up the forms (when the bulletin clearly mentions black or blue pen), others submitted folded and dog-eared forms at the submission counter. Some forms were clearly not handled or protected properly from the constant rain as the ink had smudged in many forms.

At one point the KMC centre ran out of information bulletins, which forced many students to share it with others. After half an hour, the forms too were out of stock. The fresh batch arrived soon.

While lot of applicants admitted to good old procrastination, others said they had to refill their forms. “I had filled up the OMR form in pencil. When I deposited it at the counter, they told me that I had to fill the form in blue pen,” said Sneha Kalra. Kalra was not the only one who had not read the instructions in the information bulletin. Sunita Tandon had filled up the non-collegiate form assuming that it was for regular courses. “Today I am filling up the OMR form,” she said.

There was also the lot who wanted to make changes after submitting the form in a hurry. “I felt I had applied to very few colleges and wanted to fill in more choices,” said Anita Bhival, who has applied for the BA Programme.

Students coming from various parts of South Delhi had a tough time reaching South Campus, as there was a massive traffic jam at Outer Ring Road. Many had to wait for over 45-minutes just to get out of the clogged road near IIT area. Despite that South Campus colleges saw a rush of applicants. “Many applicants were caught in rain or traffic, so we kept our counters open beyond the deadline and tried to accommodate as many latecomers as possible,” said an official at the Sri Venkateswara College.

With the submission of forms over, students will have to wait for over a week before colleges announce the first cut-off on June 26. Admission and payment of fees based on the first list will be open from June 28 to June 30.
