An MPhil student of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), who did not wish to be identified, attempted suicide from the sixth floor of the university library on Tuesday.

He was amongst a large number of JNU students, who have been protesting the 67 per cent university prospectus fee hike from Rs 120 to Rs 200 for the past month. Last week, five students were rusticated for not allowing prospectus forms to be sold. For the past four days, there has been an ongoing hunger strike on the campus.

“At approximately 1.30 PM, the student went to the library’s window on the sixth floor and threatened to jump, shouting he would commit suicide if the administration did not revoke its decision over the fee hike of the prospectus and rustification of five students,” said Shefalika Shekhar, JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) vice-president, one of the students
rusticated.

“We all found him holding a banner against commercialisation and shouting slogans. After two hours, JNUSU and some members of the faculty convinced him to come down,” she added.

A large crowd of students were witness the suicide drama and a PCR van was also present. “He wanted members of the administration to roll back their decision. I called up the rector, but he never showed up,” said Mobeen Alam, JNUSU joint secretary, one of the five rusticated students.

When he was asked to come down, the student feared he would be arrested.

However, he was immediately rushed to the university’s health centre, where he was said to be suffering from high blood pressure and psychological problems. He was shortly admitted to AIIMS.

JNU rector Ram Adhikari said he could not comment on the incident, as he is not in the city.
