A total of 65 shops were sealed in the Sujan Singh Park area on Friday on the directions of a Supreme Court-appointed monitoring committee. According to the committee, the owners of the property had been carrying out commercial activities, though it is only meant for residential use.
"We assisted the monitoring committee and the land and development office in carrying out the action. The owners had been misusing the premises and had been carrying out commercial activities, which is not permitted," said Anand Tiwari, spokesman of New Delhi Municipal Council.
The shopkeepers, though, had a different story to tell.
"The sealing squad arrived out of the blue and sealed the shops. We were not served any notice," said Pawan, who owns a shop in Sujan Singh Park.
