This weekend amid all the heat and dust of the Capital, Delhi Haat at INA is serving as an oasis and instead of plain water, one gets to sample mouthwatering sharbats.
Organised by Delhi Tourism, this four-day fiesta from May 30 to June 2 has everything a thirsty soul yearns for.
Other than thandai, lassi, jaljeera, mango shake, aam ka panna and other milk-based drinks, there are favourites like chuski, kulfi, faluda and ice creams on offer.
“It’s interesting to have Old Delhi specialities like sharbat, kala khatta and kulfi in one place. Earlier, we used to make it at home but in today’s fast-paced life it becomes difficult to get fresh sharbat,” Renu Sharma, a resident of Green Park, said.
From Turkman Gate, the over two-decade-old stall Shabnam Chuski with its famous kala khatta had visitors making a beeline.
According to owner Mohammad Gulzar, the treat with 15 masalas and five salts is a crowd favourite.
“Summer is the perfect time to indulge in these delicacies. Even though the sales are not as good as earlier years, it is still becoming difficult to manage the stall at times,” Gulzar said.
The stall which is grabbing eyeballs, however, is the stall of Navdanya Organic Food.
Be it aam panna, bel panna, sattu pani, mango lassi, aam ras or shikanji, the taste is authentic as there are no added chemicals or preservatives.
Rajiv Payal, who was manning the Navdanya stall, said, “Even though due to all our products being organic they attract a niche clientele, a lot of people are showing interest and are impressed after tasting our sharbats.”
Milk O Mix with its seven flavours and Hitkary with its 16 sugar-based sharbats also stood out among the 10-odd stalls enthralling Delhiites.
Some visitors, however, were not that impressed with the coolers on offer.
“The kids really enjoyed tasting new milk and sharbat flavours. Many of these we don’t get easily in the market. I was expecting many more sharbat stalls and found many products grossly overpriced. There could have been more variety and flavours as well,” Astha Kapoor, a resident of Defence Colony, said.
There are also daily cultural performances as part of the festival, organised by the Sahitya Kala Parishad.
