An overflowing mass of supporters queued outside the hospital for hours after their beloved leader was pumped with bullets — offering everything, from their prayers to the blood in their veins.
A corroboration of the popularity that his apparent development initiatives have brought to southwest Delhi’s Najafgarh — the only moment when the surging crowd breathed a sigh of relief was when a harried Krishan Pehalwan, INLD MLA Bharat Singh’s elder brother, emerged to tell them that their ‘Bharata’ is ok.
“The operation has just been done. He’s breathing fine and the bullets are out. He just needs another favour from you: Please, just pray for him,” a visibly harried Pehalwan told the crowd.
Just three days before Singh would turn 36 — something that his three children are looking forward to — he was pumped with two bullets at the gate of his office in Najafgarh’s Sarangpur Village at 8am.
Sometime later, the spot was fortified by the local police. At the same time, however, Singh’s residence — located barely half a kilometre away — didn’t have a single police officer standing guard outside it.
“Please keep your voice down,” said Singh’s cousin Devender. “No one at home knows about the incident. I hope he’s fine before his wife and children come back from their vacation, so that we can pretend nothing happened.”
Calling it a “full-fledged assassination bid”, the police claimed to have recovered at least 10 cartridges of varying specifications — from 9mm to 0.45mm — excluding three live ones from outside Singh’s office at Dichaun Chowk.
Two to three persons, most of whom are residents of the adjacent Jharoda Kalan area and suspected to be close to the alleged mastermind of the attempt — Vikas Lakkarpur alias Vicky — are being questioned by the police even as Vicky is absconding.
