A 32-year-old man, accused of trying to steal a mare, was tied to an old bike and beaten to death with an iron rod allegedly by two men who later fled the spot.
The incident took place in outer Delhi’s Ranhola area and came to light on June 18 when the victim’s body was found at a community center where the accused had tortured him and left him dead.
The accused — Vijay Lakra and Manjeet Pal — were allegedly under the influence of drugs when they thrashed the victim with iron rods and fled. They were nabbed by the police on Tuesday when they were trying to flee from Delhi.
The victim has, so far, not been identified. The police said that the victim’s face had been beaten out of shape making identification difficult.
“The body was found and preserved in the morgue. Following that we started gathering clues. We accessed the CCTV footage from the area and around and analysed it. We also asked our informers to give us inputs. We received a secret input on Tuesday saying that the men involved in the murder will meet at Ranhola village as they planned to leave Delhi. Following the information, the police laid a trap and the men were apprehended,” a senior police officer said.
Police said that the men revealed that they were on their way home when they heard a mob shouting. They saw the 32-year-old surrounded by a group of people. They claimed that the man was trying to steal a broodmare. The locals also said that the man had earlier been involved in thefts in the area.
“They confessed that they saved the man from the mob and took him to a community center where they the tied him to an old bike with a rope and started torturing him. They picked up an iron rod and thrashed him till he bled to death. The men then left the body at the community center and left the spot,” a senior police officer said.
The police said that both accused were under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
“Both are drug addicts and were in the influence of drugs and alcohol when they thrashed him to death. We have arrested them and registered a case of murder in the matter,” a police officer said. Police said the details of the victim’s clothes and physical description have been circulated for identification.
