A 31-year-old paraplegic — paralysed from the waist down — allegedly murdered his wife and five-year-old son while they were asleep at their Rohini home early on Friday after celebrating his sixth marriage anniversary a few hours earlier.

Nitin Maini, who has been arrested, told he police that he killed his family because he suspected his wife of being in a relationship with someone else.

“Maini, who lost his job as an interior designer three years ago after being bound to a wheelchair following a road accident, confessed to having strangled his 25-year-old wife Shweta, an NGO employee, with her dupatta and smothering their child, Garv, with a pillow,” said BS Jaiswal, DCP (outer Delhi).

Maini later tried to kill himself with a pair of scissors, Jaiswal said.

The police said Maini himself phoned the police to inform them of the murders around 2am on Friday. Shweta’s parents, however, alleged that Maini's entire family conspired in the crime and that the mother and child were poisoned.

“Being a paraplegic, it was impossible for Nitin (Maini) to kill them on his own as he was not even able to move his body without someone’s support,” said Shweta’s father Dinesh Verma.

Verma said Maini’s brothers were pressurising him to give them a share of the R21 lakh he received from the insurance company after his accident.

His mother Sushma said they were asleep when the police came.

“We told them Nitin was in his bedroom with his wife and son. We were shocked when they told us he had killed Shweta and Garv.”
