A speeding sports utility vehicle (SUV) allegedly mowed down five people in northwest Delhi early on Friday. Fiftyfive-year-old property dealer Rakesh Garg, his wife Uma and their two sons Mukul (21) and Radhey (10) were returning from a wedding party, with Rakesh’s 18-year-old niece Tanvi.
Barely a few metres away from their Tri Nagar home, a Scorpio allegedly hit their Maruti car at high speed, near the Kanhaiyya Nagar Metro station around 1 a.m.
The impact was such that family members were thrown out. “I was about to take a passenger to Inderlok when I saw a speeding Scorpio travelling towards Keshav Puram. On hearing a loud bang, I realised the Scorpio had crashed into a Maruti,” said Md. Alam, 35, an autorickshaw driver.
The SUV driver allegedly fled the scene leaving the family to die. Police suspect the three persons who were in the car could have been drunk.
“My grandson Mukul and son Rakesh died instantly. But the police took the others to the distant Sushruta Trauma Care Centre. Had they been taken to a hospital in Ashok Vihar, their lives could have been saved,” said Kiran Devi, Rakesh’s mother.
“We’ve detained three men and are examining their blood sample to determine if they had consumed alcohol,” said NS Bundela, DCP (northwest). The Scorpio was traced to Rohini transporter Brahm Prakash who claimed he had lent the car to his nephew.
