Janata Dal leader Subramaniyam Swamy approached the special CBI court seeking direction to appoint him as public prosecutor along with special public prosecutor UU Lalit. Swamy insisted his inclusion in the prosecution team would strengthen the agency’s stand in the 2G spectrum scam.
Swamy said, “The court should give me a formal status. I will be happy to assist the CBI in its investigation”. The court sought opinion from CBI prosecutor Lalit asking whether Swamy’s private complaint against A Raja in 2G scam could be clubbed with the agency’s FIR.
However, Vijay Aggarwal, counsel for Swan Telecom MD Vinod Goenka opposed Swamy’s contention. He said, “The SC has appointed a special public prosecutor. Swamy demands are unjustified. The court should dismiss his plea.”
The court deferred the matter for further hearing on May 4 after the CBI sought two weeks time to file its response.
During the hearing, Swamy said that although the CBI is probing the matter and has filed the chargesheet, his private complaint has wider ambit in some aspects. He said, “The scope of my application overlaps with the CBI case, but in some cases its ambit is wider than that of the CBI’s FIR.”
Swamy added he was willing to assist the CBI and Lalit. CBI prosecutor AK Singh said they need two weeks time to respond.
