The foundation and the structure of the Taj Mahal is stable and secure, the Lok Sabha was informed on Wednesday.

"Scientific studies at the behest of Archaeological Survey of India on various structural aspects of the Taj Mahal by Survey of India, Dehradun and Central Building Research Institute, Roorkee have shown that the foundation of the monument as well as its structure are stable and secure,"

Minister of State for Planning V Narayanasamy said.

He was replying to a question put to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who also holds the Culture portfolio, on whether the foundation of the Taj Mahal had weakened considerably.

"The Taj Mahal is in a good state of preservation," he said adding that essential conservation works on the monument are regularly carried out by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Narayanasamy replied in the negative to a question on whether the government was contemplating construction of a barrage at river Yamuna in Agra.
