Four persons were killed when a speeding tanker ploughed into a bus stop after hitting a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus and an autorickshaw. The incident occurred at Dhaula Kuan in south Delhi. Among those killed was a Delhi University student and a senior citizen couple.

The tanker, which was on army duty, was coming from Naraina and was headed towards AIIMS.

“The tanker first hit a DTC bus and then an auto. The driver of the tanker lost control and drove into the Satya Niketan bus stop. The people standing at the bus stop suffered injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital,” said a senior police officer requesting anonymity.

Of the four victims, one is Jaspreet Kaur (20) who was studying in Delhi University’s Shaheed Bhagat Singh College in Sheikh Sarai.

A senior citizen couple Ramcharan Pokhrial (64) and his wife Kalteshwari (60), residents of Paschim Vihar in west Delhi, were also killed. The fourth victim is yet to be identified. Two persons were also injured in the accident and are currently recuperating in the hospital.

According to the police, Kaur was a resident of Gurgaon and her family members have been informed about the accident. “The couple was declared brought dead while Kaur and the other victim succumbed to their injuries after they were rushed to the Safdarjung Hospital,” the officer said.

The driver of the tanker, identified as Pooran Singh, also sustained minor injuries. “He was arrested after being administered first aid,” the police officer added.

According to one of Pokhrial’s relatives, the couple had been on their way to meet a relative in RK Puram. “They wanted to meet a relative in RK Puram and had left the house in the morning. At 12 noon, we came to know that they had died in an accident. They had gotten down at Satya Niketan to board a bus for RK Puram. It was when they were waiting at the bus stop that the tanker rammed into them,” said Parvesh Dhoudiyal, a relative of the couple.

The couple is survived by a son, daughter-in-law and two daughters. Pokhrial was an employee of a private firm.

“We have recorded the statement of the driver. He told us that after hitting the DTC bus, he lost control of the tanker. However, we are investigating into the exact cause of the accident,” said a senior police officer.

The police, however, have denied the fact that the driver had been drunk. A case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving has been registered at the Dhaula Kuan police station and further investigations are on.
