A nickname tattooed on a wrist. This is what is helping the police zero in on a juvenile, who has been accused of raping a 19-year-old Delhi University student on November 3.
More than a week after four men, including a juvenile, abducted and gang raped the Delhi University (DU) student, investigators are hot on the trail of the juvenile accused — all because of his nickname tattooed on the right wrist and now, indelibly etched upon the victim’s mind.
The case is a stark reminder of the infamous Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) rape case, in which the victim — a fourth-year medical student at the MAMC — was raped on the terrace of the Khooni Darwaza monument.
In that instance too, the victim was able to recognise the accused with the help of his name tattooed on his arm.
“When I found out about the incident, I begged my daughter to tell the police anything that would lead them to the rapists, but the strain kept her from giving them any clues,” the victim’s mother told the Hindustan Times.
A part-time sales executive at a Noida mall, the woman was reportedly awaiting an office cab on November 3, when four men in an autorickshaw pulled her inside the vehicle, forcibly took her to a vacant parking lot in central Delhi’s Pragati Maidan and took turns to rape her.
Even as her mother lost all hope of bringing the perpetrators of the crime to justice, her daughter remembered a five-letter word etched on one of the assailants’ wrists.
According to sources, the reference to the tattoo turned out to be more helpful than they had initially thought it could be.
“When we got hold of Rambir, the auto driver, we were in a position to extract more information from him, since we knew the nickname of the juvenile accused,” said the officer.
“We bombarded him with questions about the juvenile and his association with him,” the officer added. Police said they had already zeroed-in the juvenile, who is an important link in the rape case.
“The accused juvenile was a resident of Nangal Machchi village, that used to be located near the vacant parking lot where the crime was committed. That is why he decided to take the victim there,” he said.
“The other two accused are his associates and he is our only link to them,” said the officer.
Additional commissioner of police (east) KC Dwivedi said, “We have alerted the police of the area where the juvenile accused is suspected to be hiding. He and his associates will be nabbed soon.”
