Pushed on a backfoot on the Telangana issue by an aggressive YSR Congress chief, Jaganmohan Reddy, TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu will fast in the capital on Monday.
Naidu, who recently shared stage with the BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, amid growing speculation of an alliance between the two parties, is bringing his battle to the capital, apparently to avoid any comparison with Reddy.
The YSR Congress chief had gone on an indefinite fast on Saturday against the union cabinet’s decision to begin the official process for the creation of a separate Telangana state from Andhra Pradesh.
This was followed by Naidu’s announcement about his fast in the capital. It is, however, not clear whether the former chief minister would go on an indefinite fast or he would sit on a single day fast.
Party leaders say the final decision would be taken after Naidu arrives in the capital in the morning. After meeting TDP leaders, he would pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. Naidu will also address the media before beginning his fast.
It remains to be seen whether the TDP chief would respond to Reddy’s challenge on why he is not ready to commit in writing that he is opposed to the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.
