A 15-year-old schoolboy was crushed to death by a Blueline bus near Shastri Park in northeast Delhi’s Seelampur area on Wednesday.
Sanchit Gupta was trying to board a bus when he fell from the footboard and an oncoming Blueline bus ran over him, said an eyewitness.
There have been 80 Blueline bus victims so far this year.
Sanchit’s friends damaged more than 40 vehicles and blocked the entire Seelampur road, choking traffic for more than two hours. The students also thrashed the Blueline bus driver and the helper.
Sanchit was a student of Class X at HM DAV Senior Secondary School in Daryaganj. He turned 15 a fortnight ago.
He lived in C Block, Usmanpur. He was trying to board a Blueline bus at the Shastri Park traffic intersection when the accident occurred.
“The bus was full beyond capacity and Sanchit was boarding the bus when the driver applied the brakes suddenly and he fell on the road. A speeding Blueline bus that was trying to overtake this bus ran over him and he was killed on the spot,” said Praveen Mishra, one of Sanchit’s classmate who was with him when the accident occurred.
A mob of about 500 students vented their anger on Blueline buses plying on the particular route and even damaged some DTC buses.
“Some of them were from Sanchit’s school while there were some from other schools also. As soon as the news of Sanchit’s death, spread they came out on the roads and damaged the buses,” said a senior police officer.
Soon after the incident a police team was rushed to the spot but the students continued to damage the buses.
Sanchit’s father M.K. Gupta is a senior official at a steel factory in Wazirabad. His mother Sunita Gupta is a schoolteacher.
“My son wanted to be a scientist. He was extremely good in studies. He had topped his school examinations recently,” said Sanchit’s father.
Police said they have registered a case of rash and negligent driving and have arrested the driver, Karamveer. The helper was rushed to GTB Hospital for medical attention.
“We have arrested the driver. He was also beaten up the students,” said Jaspal Singh, DCP (northeast).
