The alert follows specific information received from the Intelligence Bureau and an unnamed foreign intelligence agency about terror groups planning to carry out attacks in the two cities.
The intelligence input identified three locations in Delhi, including underground shopping complex Palika Bazar, as the primary targets of Kashmiri terror groups. Government officials refused to identify the specific locations expected to be targeted by the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tayyeba.
"Mumbai police have been given the full details… it may not be prudent to put this information in public domain," a senior home ministry official said.
The ministry advisory asked Maharashtra police to stay on alert till this month-end. In Delhi, government officials said the primary threat may have blown over.
"The available information was very specific… that the attack was being planned for yesterday," a home ministry official said.
It was the first big challenge for BK Gupta, who took over as Delhi police commissioner just a few days ago. Gupta spent most part of the day and night overseeing security.
The home ministry has asked the city police to continue to be on alert.
