A major security threat is looming over the city mainly from operatives of Indian Mujahideen (IM), according to recent Intelligence Bureau (IB) inputs.
"We have received information that IM operatives might enter the city through road via Uttar Pradesh. We also received information that some old Maruti 800 and Tata Indica might be used to enter the city. We have increased checks on our side of the border and several teams are on standby," said a senior UP Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) officer, on condition of anonymity.
Police on high alert
The Capital's police force, which is still to crack the Jama Masjid shooting and bomb blast case that happened right before the CWG-2010, is not taking any chances.
"We have inputs of threat to the city. A high level meeting with other state police forces was also held in this regard," said a senior Delhi Police officer on condition of anonymity.
Mock drills galore
Delhi Police are not taking any chances and are conducting mock drills to keep their men on their toes and ready for any situation.
In the last seven days alone, the Delhi Police carried out three pan-Delhi mock drills. A routine check of cars was also conducted in various markets and security has been stepped up everywhere.
"Today we carried out a mock drill of a bomb threat at Vishal Cinema. PCR vans, CAT ambulances, fire brigade, bomb disposal squad, crime investigation team and civil defence personnel also reached the spot at the quickest possible time. The SWAT (Special Weapon & Arms Tactics) team of the Special Cell also joined the operation. The team captured the fake insurgent, who was hiding, within 15 minutes. Traffic police isolated the spot and ensured smooth flow of traffic in other areas," said V Renganathan, deputy commissioner of police (West).
In the last one year the city has witnessed more than 1,500 mock drills, thanks to the number of important events the Capital played host to.
"First we were preparing for the Commonwealth Games, which almost took the whole year. Then the US President visited the city and after that a host of other dignitaries came," added the officer.
According to the police, it conducted the highest number of mock drills in last five years.
