On Tuesday morning, four armed men on two motorcycles robbed two security guards ferrying money to bank ATMs in Connaught Place of Rs 16.78 lakh. The robbery came less than 24 hours after a bank was robbed in Outer Delhi.
It happened like this, according to the version available with the police: around 9.30 a.m., security agency AP Securitas deployed an armoured van to move the cash from its strong room in Nangal Rai in Delhi Cantontment to its office in Satya Niketan. The armoured van was parked on the Ring Road. When the two guards reached the service lane just 100 metres from the office carrying the bag with the money, they were shot at. One bullet hit the mobile phone of guard Uttam Bahadur that was in his trouser pocket.
The robbers snatched the bag from the unarmed guards and rode away, said a senior police officer who declined to be identified because he is not authorised to speak to the media.
The armoured van had six people inside and was carrying Rs 2 crore in cash – and not a single armed guard. Police suspect an insider was involved. “The information and timing of the attack were perfect. They knew the guards would be unarmed”, the police officer said.
AP Securitas officials were unavailable for comment.
