Cash and clothing worth lakhs of rupees were stolen from a shop in the posh South Extension Part-I market on Friday night.

Police said the thieves broke open locks and entered the shop. Unconfirmed reports also suggested that the thieves drilled a hole in the side wall of the shop to gain entry.

The police said the incident happened at an upmarket shop named Diwan's in the area.

"The shop sells sarees and other wedding clothing. Thieves gained entry into the shop in the middle of the night and made way with sarees worth around R20 lakh. But we are yet to get a confirmed value of the stolen items," said a senior police officer.

The police said the guard of the area on duty was questioned but he claimed innocence and said he had no clue. The police said an insider could be involved in the theft.

Local shopkeepers, meanwhile, blamed lack of proper beat policing in the area for the theft.

"We have time and again told the police that our shops were vulnerable due to their location. We asked them to increase beat policing in the area but nothing has been done till now," said one of the shopkeepers in the area.

The police said crime and forensic teams and dog squads were sent to the spot.

"We have zeroed in on a few gangs in the area and are investigating the matter," added the officer.

A case has been registered at Kotla Mubarakpur Police station.
