This is a classic case of one crime leading to another. Shattered financially after paying a ransom to rescue his brother from kidnappers, a man kidnapped another person to make up for his lost funds.

The entire story started when some kidnappers from the Chambal area abducted Basant Kumar’s brother Pramod and demanded a ransom for him. After two months, Basant managed to pay the ransom amount of Rs 7 lakh and rescue Pramod. "As they were economically shattered, Pramod planned and provoked Basant to search for some rich person, who could pay a handsome amount as ransom," Sanjay Jain, DCP (northeast) added. http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/HTEditImages/Images/07_08_11-metro3.jpg

Basant gave in and decided to kidnap Farid Khan, only because he owns three cars. Basant knew Farid from earlier as he had taken a cab from him on rent in the past.

“On July 30, Basant, along with his brother Pramod, brother-in-law Amit and another associate, Pankaj, met Khan and told him that he had to take a patient to Khurja and wanted his help,” Jain said. Amit was to act as the patient.

On their way to Khurja, they overpowered Khan and tied him up with ropes. “From there, they took Khan to village Kuddanna, on the banks of Chambal river, inside a jungle and handed Khan

over to their counterpart Hari Singh Sharma, who was to get 10% of the ransom money,” Jain added.

With kidnapping being a common trade in the area, Sharma often used to act as a mediator between two kidnapping gangs.

Incidentally, Sharma had acted as a mediator in Pramod’s kidnapping too.

On July 31, the four accused, Basant, Pramod, Amit and Pankaj handed Khan over to Sharma. They then called Khan’s family and demanded R20 lakh as ransom money.

“Sharma kept the hostage tied with an iron chain and lock in his house and waited for instructions from Basant. At the same time, Sharma was negotiating with some kidnapping gangs active in the area. They had to hand over the hostage to one such gang on August 5. However, we rescued him before that,” Jain further said.

Both Basant and Sharma have been arrested and Khan has been reunited with his family.
