Nineteen-year-old Arjun Kumar was walking along the pavement in south Delhi's Vasant Kunj on Monday morning when he allegedly snatched a handbag from a woman, part of a small gathering.

An archetypical example of the average Delhi snatcher, as many as 93% of whom are found to be first-timers, this was the first time Arjun allegedly found himself on the wrong side of the law. So much so, he was running for his life to hide the booty after the crime.

The police claim that Arjun, a resident of the adjacent Israeli Camp area, had no inkling that his first victim would turn out to be the wife of Additional Solicitor General of India, Gaurav Banerjee.

“The incident was reported between 11:30 am and noon yesterday. Arjun was arrested on Tuesday morning after we activated our entire beat staff and directed them to track the culprit through the night,” Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (south) said while confirming the incident as well as the arrest. The victim was on a heritage tour of the area when Arjun allegedly targeted her near the Vasant Valley School area around 11 am.

The victim told the police that she was carrying a mid-sized black handbag containing her mobile phone, R1,500, some documentation in the form of her PAN card, two debit cards and her driver's licence.

“Upon questioning, Arjun confessed to the crime. He then led the police team to the adjacent Rangpuri Pahadi area. He’d spent the entire amount and hid the bag below a huge boulder in the forested area,” said a senior police officer.

Though the police were able to recover the stolen bag and mobile phone, they are yet to locate the PAN card, driver's licence and two debit cards.
