Getting out of banks with large amounts of cash can be a dangerous proposition in the Capital, with two cases of snatchings happening in a matter of few hours in different parts of the city on Wednesday.
In the first case, two men on a motorcycle snatched a bag containing Rs one lakh from a businessman right outside a private bank in Lajpat Nagar.
According to police, the incident occurred around 1:30 pm outside Axis Bank in Lajpat Nagar-II.
Police said that Vikas Aggarwal (36) had withdrawn cash from the bank and was on his way to HDFC Bank across the road.
"Two men who were not wearing helmets intercepted him right beneath the metro-rail section under construction, snatched the bag from him and sped away. The bag contained cash as well as cheque books and other documents," said a senior police officer.
Aggarwal was on foot and had parked his car in the nearby area. He even tried to follow the snatchers with the help of a passerby who was on a motorcycle. Aggarwal lost track of them by the time he reached the Moolchand Flyover.
Amarnath, a tobacco seller at the spot and an eyewitness, said, "The youths were hiding behind the Metro construction site. They were on a black motorcycle."
A case of snatching has been registered against unknown persons with the Lajpat Nagar Police Station. cused.
In the second incident, 45-year-old Umaid Singh, who walked out of Deutsche Bank on Kasturba Gandhi (KG) Marg after withdrawing Rs. 50,000, was stopped by two youths on a scooter and his bag snatched. Police said the incident was reported at 4:00 p.m., just hours after the Lajpat Nagar snatching.
According to police, Singh, who is an executive in a private company on KG Marg, had withdrawn the money for official purposes and was crossing the road. Two youths snatched his bag and fled the spot. Singh immediately informed the police control room.
A case of snatching has been registered against unknown assailants at the Barakhamba Road Police Station.
