Three ragpicker kids fall into open sewer in Pitampura, one dead

One ragpicker kid was killed after she allegedly fell into an open sewer, along with two others, at Pitampura in northwest Delhi on Friday.

One ragpicker kid was killed after she allegedly fell into an open sewer, along with two others, at Pitampura in northwest Delhi on Friday.

According to the police, the children were rag pickers.

The victim has been identified as Rubiyan. Two other children, Arjun and Sonu, were injured while trying to save her.

They allegedly jumped inside a locked premises where the sewer was in an open state.

The police said it is still not known how they fell into the sewer. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest Delhi) N.S. Bundela said, “The PCR call was made around 7:00 pm. The police immediately went to the spot and alerted other emergency services as well.”

He said the police tried to rescue the children but in vain.

“The police personnel who reached the spot risked their lives and went inside the sewer in an effort to rescue the children. They did not have any protective gear but they still went inside,” said Bundela.

“One of them was even on the verge of collapsing after he inhaled toxic gasses inside the sewer,” he added.

The police said that they managed to bring the children out but one of them was declared brought dead by the doctors.

According to fire officials, the rescue operations continued till 9:00 pm.

The police said prima facie it seems the children

jumped inside locked premises of a building and one of them accidentally fell into the sewer.

“The others might have jumped in to help their friend,” added the fire official.
