Name: Ravideep Chahar
Occupation: Senior bureaucrat
swindled of: Rs 40,000
Foxed three times by domestic help agencies, the Chahars of MCD Flats, Minto Road, have had enough. The family members have taken it upon themselves to take care of their only daughter and the household chores.
It is not an easy task for the family of a busy bureaucrat certainly, and the time spent on doing things a domestic help could do has meant they have had to bring in changes in their professional and personal lives.
“Domestic agents fleeced money from us not once, not twice but three times,” said Ravideep Chahar. “Every time I went to a new agent they took around Rs 15,000 from us.”
According to Chahar, the first maid they sourced from an agent in Lajpat Nagar stayed home for one night and left on the pretext of going to her house and “getting some things”. She never returned.
“Worried I called the agent who said he was trying to get a girl from Orissa and will let us know in a few days’ time. When I asked him to return the money, he refused. The same happened with the second and the third agency.”
Left with no options, Chahar went to the police.
“I was able to recover only some of the money. But it took me months before that could happen and I ended up wasting a lot of time.”
For now, the family is firm about not contacting any more agencies.
“My parents are old and we need someone to take care of our five-year-old Mriganka. My wife has started a new firm but is not able to work properly because she has to take care of our daughter also. There are times when I have to come back early from work.”
