In order to give a boost to tourism in Old Delhi, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is planning to set up tourist centres all around the area. These centres will provide guided tours and will also provide information about cultural programmes taking place in Old Delhi. These centres will come up at New and Old Delhi Railway Stations, near Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Fountain Chowk and Lahori Gate.
“These tourist centres will provide pick-up and drop services from the guesthouses and hotels. We will the provide tourists an orientation on Chandni Chowk at the upcoming museum at Lahori Gate. We will also provide the tourists with guided tours of the area and will take them to the best food joints available in the Walled City. This will help improve tourism prospect in the area and showcase it’s rich heritage” said standing committee chairman Vijender Gupta.
The civic agency has already called tenders for redesigning and beautifying the 1.3 km stretch in Chandni Chowk from Red Fort to Fatehpuri Mosque to revive the lost glory of the Walled City.
The civic agency has also said that the essentiality of trade licenses for shopkeepers carrying out trade in 24 items mentioned in the Master Plan 2021 would also be done away with. This move, said MCD, will benefit five lakh traders dealing with items related to day-to-day needs.
