Kalkaji police have arrested a 36-year-old businessman on charges of dowry harassment. His wife was allegedly forced to commit suicide after being harassed for dowry.
The police arrested Sarbjeet Singh from his house in Kalkaji in southeast Delhi on Wednesday and have registered a case against him.
Sunita (28) married Singh, a contractor of construction materials, in March 2008.
On Tuesday, the housewife was rushed to Majedia Hospital by her husband and in-laws around 9.30 p.m. Her husband told the hospital authorities that she had fallen from stairs. An hour after reaching the hospital, the woman was pronounced dead.
“The doctors found ligature marks on the neck of the victim. They informed the police and during investigations it was found that she had hanged herself to death,” said a senior police officer who didn’t give his name, as he isn’t authorised to speak to the media.
The victim’s mother and sister gave a statement to the police in which they alleged that the victim was often harassed for dowry.
A sub divisional magistrate (SDM) has initiated an inquiry into the case on the basis of statement provided by the victim’s family.
“The victim’s family told us that on Tuesday she had an argument with her husband after which she hung herself in her bedroom,” said the officer.
Police said the victim was Singh’s second wife and he has a son from his first marriage.
