After several rounds of experiments and brain-storming, the Public Works Department (PWD) seems to have found a solution to the growing vehicular mess between Vasant Vihar and National Highway 8 (NH8) along the Outer Ring Road in south Delhi.
The Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering) Centre, the agency entrusted with the responsibility to approve projects related to road and transport infrastructure for Delhi, on Friday approved the PWD’s plan to construct an elevated road between Munirka flyover and Subroto Park.
They also approved of constructing an underpass on Benito Jaurez Marg and Ring Road to decongest Rao Tula Ram Marg and traffic intersections at Outer Ring Road and Moti Bagh.
According to the plan, the PWD will construct a three-lane elevated loop or a wing from Munirka flyover, which will run parallel to RTR flyover and land just before NH8. An underpass will also be constructed at Benito Juarez Marg near the south Delhi university campus for vehicles to take a right turn on Ring Road.
“These two measures will decongest the RTR Road, the Moti Bagh traffic intersection and RTR-Outer Ring Road intersection,” Delhi PWD minister Rajkumar Chauhan said.
Chauhan said the project will now be taken to the Delhi Urban Arts Commission (DUAC). “After the DUAC’s approval, the department will prepare the estimates and take the government’s approval. We hope the construction will start by the end of this year,” he added. The construction will take around 12-18 months.
Ahead of the CWG in 2010, the PWD had built three flyovers between IIT Gate and NH8 along the Outer Ring Road to convert the stretch signal free.
