A Delhi Police traffic constable was beaten up by an angry mob after he slapped an auto-rickshaw driver in Gokul Puri area of north-east Delhi.

According to police, the incident took place on Tuesday afternoon when Sandeep Kumar stopped an auto-rickshaw bearing an Uttar Pradesh registration number. Traffic police said autos with UP registration are not allowed to ply in Delhi except to fill up CNG.

“But Ashish, the auto driver, did not stop and Kumar followed him. After intercepting Ashish, Kumar slapped him. This irked other passerbys and auto drivers,” said a senior police officer.

Kumar was beaten up before a PCR call was made and police rescued him. Senior police officers had to intervene as the mob halted traffic for about half-an-hour alleging police were extorting money from auto drivers.

Both were taken to the police station and a case lodged against Ashish and four others at Gokul Puri police station for allegedly beating up the constable. A probe is on.
