Driving drunk, jumping the lights, speeding, and use of mobile phones behind the wheel will attract higher fines and jail terms under new rules approved by the Union cabinet on Thursday.

The increase in penalties — up to five times — for traffic violations under the proposed amendment to the Motor Vehicles Act, is likely to be introduced in the budget session of Parliament.

The proposed rules also include substantial hikes in compensation to accident victims. Dangerous driving and not wearing seat belts or helmets will also attract higher punishment.

Most experts have welcomed the rules, though some feel it will lead to more corruption.

Additional commissioner of police (traffic) Brajesh Singh said that motorists will be more careful since trends worldwide show that people become more cautious when the fines are high.

“It will also have a positive effect on the traffic flow,” he said.

However, former inspector general of police YC Pawar said the police do not have enough manpower to implement the existing laws.
