The Traffic Police may soon lift its suspension on real time traffic updates through SMS, which it had temporarily stopped following Trai’s initiative of curbing unsolicited telemarketing calls.

In a meeting with officials of the Telephone Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) on Friday, the Delhi traffic police have raised the demand for allowing it to resume its mass SMS sending facility, so that about 1.07 lakh subscribers continue to benefit from the service, which was launched during June last year.

Trai officials have reportedly promised to look into the matter.

“We told Trai officials that traffic updates through SMS is a subscription based service and not unsolicited. Subscription based SMS service should be allowed,” said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic).

He said that the Traffic Police are hopeful that they will be able to re-launch the service within a week.
