A senior Indian Information Service (IIS) officer, Jagjit Singh Bindra, who was allegedly depressed over his transfer to Dehradun, committed suicide on Friday at his residence in east Delhi. He was supposed to join the new charge on Monday.
His family members had gone to a nearby gurdwara when Bindra hung himself.
“When his family members returned, no one opened the door. They entered the house through the window and found him hanging. He was rushed to Vimla Devi hospital where he was declared dead,” the police said.
Bindra, 55, was among 117 IIS officers transferred to different locations across India by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry according to the new transfer policy.
The policy envisaged shifting of officials, who had been posted at a particular location for a long period. Of them, 98 officials were promoted recently, including Bindra.
The deceased, a resident of Mayur Vihar in east Delhi, it appeared was not happy with his transfer from Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP), where he was a campaign officer for the last 20 years, to the All India Radio office in Dehradun, where he had to join on Monday.
He was promoted after nearly 20 years earlier this year and his transfer was must.
As per government rules, an official is transferred on promotion.
Bindra had recently met I&B ministry officials seeking cancellation of his transfer order on medical grounds.
The ministry officials had assured to look into his grievance compassionately. Many other IIS officers had also represented against their transfer to the ministry.
The police said Bindra was depressed for some time and there was nobody at home when he took the extreme step.
No suicide note was found. He is survived by a son, daughter and wife, who works in Delhi Police. The ministry has described the extreme step taken by him as “unfortunate”.
