A 25-year-old transport operator was gunned down by a bike-borne assailant in northwest Delhi's Swarup Nagar on Friday evening, police said.
Identified as Dheeraj Saini, a resident of Nathupura, the victim was standing near his house when he was shot dead around 9:30pm.
"Saini and his friend were just chatting when a bike with two men on it pulled up near them. Both the men were wearing helmets," said a senior police officer.
As soon as the bike stopped in front of them, the pillion rider got off and brandished a pistol after walking up to Saini, who owns a minibus which he utilises for his small travel business, moments later.
"The victim realised the intent of the helmet-clad man and tried to run but his bid to escape was met with bullets fired by the assailant. Saini and his friend tried to run away from the place but Saini collapsed on the street," the officer said.
The assailant's other associate who was riding the bike zoomed off in the opposite direction. Local residents gathered at the spot after hearing the commotion and informed the police.
A police team reached the spot and rushed Saini to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital where he was declared dead by doctors, police said.
"Initial enquiry into the incident has revealed that the incident was probably triggered by personal enmity. A case of murder has been registered at the Swarup Nagar Police Station and we are investigating it from all angles," the officer added.
