His ladylove’s lust for all things expensive allegedly drove a 23-year-old dance instructor into perpetrating an armed robbery at a beauty parlour owner’s west Delhi residence on the eve of Dussehra.

V Renganathan, additional commissioner of police (west) said Shahnawaz, a resident of UP’s Rampur, was arrested along with his girlfriend Chetna Singh and her associate Jaspreet Kaur for robbing R3.5 lakh from a Hari Nagar residence on the evening of October 7.

“The arrests were made following investigations into a complaint filed by Alka Panchal, a resident of Hari Nagar, about two men who forcibly entered her house on the eve of Dusshera and decamped with R3.5 lakh in cash, motorcycle and other articles,” said Renganathan.

While Shahnawaz runs a dance academy in Faridabad, Chetna and Jaspreet work as marketing executives for a daily newspaper based in Maharashtra, police said. According to police, what helped investigators zero-in on the trio was crucial information that the cash money in question had been returned to the family by a local property broker after their bid to buy some property through his services had failed recently. “Since the property issue was known only to a few people, we suspected the incident to be the handiwork of people known to the family. During interrogation, employees of the parlour revealed that two ladies were present in the parlour when the incident had occurred,” said a senior police officer investigating the case.

More enquiries revealed that one of the women was an old customer. “On questing the suspected duo, Chetna and Jaspreet, they confessed that they had opened the back gate of the house through the parlour that had made entry easy for Shahnawaz and his associate,” the officer said.

Shahnawaz was arrested from Hari Nagar while he was planning to escape to Meerut on Wednesday.
