The controversy surrounding the construction of the controversial tunnel link — between the Commonwealth Games village and Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium — near Humayun’s Tomb has now moved to the Prime Minister’s Office.

A GoM headed by HRD minister Arjun Singh on Monday referred the matter to the PMO amid repeated threats by the UNESCO to put the tomb on its endangered heritage list.

The Delhi government had rejected the Delhi Urban Arts Commission’s alternative plan for the tunnel and is sticking to the proposal to construct the tunnel close to the tomb, maintaining it will not endanger the monument.

The plan to construct the tunnel was stalled when the Archaeological Survey of India withdrew a conditional no-objection certificate.
