Keeping the needs of air travellers in mind, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will connect the arrival and departure terminals of the domestic airport with the upcoming Terminal 1 station on the Janakpuri West-Botanical Garden line. The terminals will be connected with walkalators.
After coming out of the Metro station, passengers would be able to take a right-angular tunnel without having to tug at the heavy luggage. Unlike other stations, this station is built in a much larger area to accommodate passengers during rush hour.
“The station box will be among the longest, having a length of 312.2m. Normally, underground stations are around 260m long. The station will have five entry/exit points. There will be two subways and another entry will cater to Mehram Nagar that is an adjacent residential area. The fourth entry/exit point will be near the police station and the fifth just before the ramp to the departure area of the airport,” said a DMRC spokesperson.
The depth of the station will be approximately 16m. As per the detailed project report (DPR), the estimated number of commuters at the station will be 66,405 in 2016 and 97,184 in 2021.
“The station will have a bright interior. Ceramic tiles and granite will be fitted in the station and colourful patterns made with the tiles. Unlike other underground stations, the lighting will be specially designed to bring the station to life,” said a DMRC official.
Ancillary buildings, chiller plants and side panels of the entry/exit structures will be covered with glazed ceramic jali work. It will provide better ventilation and there will be more daylight in the space.
The underground stations of phase III of the Delhi Metro project will have interiors made of screen-printed glass panels. The artwork will also be laminated for lasting effect and durability. These panels will be fireproof.
The DMRC will also have platform screen doors at all the stations of phase–III. There will be four lifts and eight escalators to enter and exit from the station.
Newly inducted driverless train with additional features will ply on this route.
