Social media went abuzz as soon as the grid tripped over north India. Since there was no electricity to switch on the television and know what's happening around, people started tweeting.

As early as 2.33am on Monday, people were tweeting about the blackout and later vented their ire on Facebook.

"I texted and called some of my friends and relatives to leave home early because there was a complete chaos on the roads as well," said Shubhankar Majumdar, a DU student and Twitter user.

Celebrities such as Suchitra Krishnamurthy tweeted — "Nothern Grid failure, electricity in 9 states affected, no metro service in #Delhi. Not known, when it will be restored".
