A 75-year-old man, along with his 61-year-old accomplice, was arrested in the city on Sunday, for using six youths for robbing lakhs of rupees.
The money was being carried by the employees of a foodgrain merchant.
The police arrested Sarvan Singh (75) and Manjit Singh (61) following a tip-off about the two being involved in the heist that took place on April 28 in Lahori Gate.
According to the police, Manjeet was the alleged mastermind behind the heist. They said he got to know about the employees carrying huge cash from Sarvan.
The police said Manjeet is allegedly wanted for his involvement in 28 cases and Sarvan is booked in 19 cases.
"Manjeet roped in Dinesh, Balwinder, Ravinder Paswan, Raju, Ghanshyam and Mukesh in the robbery," the police said.
The six men then conducted a recce of the area and on April 28 came on three motorcycles.
When the employees came in a car with the cash, the six intercepted them at gun point. All the accused fled with the cash on their motorcycles.
"After the incident, they assembled at Dinesh's house in Raghubir Nagar to distribute the booty," said Ashok Chand, deputy commissioner of police (crime).
Manjeet allegedly bought jewellery worth Rs20 lakh with the money and also gave R10 lakh to his son-in-law. The cash and jewellery were recovered. Police also arrested Manjeet's son-in-law in this connection.
Manjeet began his career as a bootlegger, the police said.
